Hello! My name is David Hockney. I was born on July 9, 1937 in Bradford, England, to Laura and Kenneth Hockney. I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be an artist, and my parents were always very supportive of my dream. I admired artists like Picasso, Fragonard, and Mattisse, and aspired to be as great as them. In 1953, I began my specialized education at the Bradford College of Art, and in 1959, I attended the Royal College of Art in London alongside other artists like Peter Blake and Allen Jones. At that point, I had already visited Los Angeles several times, and in 1966 I moved there. I immediately fell in love with the gorgeous swimming pools, which are the subjects of many pieces of my artwork.
During my lifetime, a lot of things were changing in the world. NASA was developing revolutionary technology, which allowed Neil Armstrong to be the first man on the moon. Meanwhile, Elvis Presley was busy changing up the music industry with his groovy tunes. It was generally a very good time to be an artist. We were much more accepted by society than our predecesors.
I am best known for my paintings, which are characterized by their bright, contrasting colors and sharp lines. Many say that I am a main contributor to the Pop Art movement, but I don't like to lump my art into just one category. Although my paintings are the most recognizable, I also have a passion for photography. I love to take pictures of everything, and I have made quite a few collages from pictures that I have taken. I still live in Los Angeles, and I continue to paint and exhibit my art in shows. I advocate for funding of the arts, and I like to help other artists out whenever I can.
