BioHello, I’m Ellsworth Kelly! I am an American painter famous for my abstract art in the hard-edged period. I was born on May 31, 1923 in Newburgh, New York and I died on December 27, 2015 in Spencertown, New York. I am famous for my painting Colors for a large wall, which was done with oil paint in 1951. Also my painting Cite, which was also done in 1951. Both of these are very abstract paintings and one thing that might’ve inspired this was the fact the color TV came out during this same year. This could’ve influence my sense of color. One interesting thing about me is that I frequently compose my paintings in separate panels and join them together to make a single painting.
My Style of Art |
I am a hard edged painter, and that means that my paintings contain abrupt transitions of color areas. The term was coined by a writer, curator and Los Angeles Times art critic Jules Langsner, along with Peter Selz, in 1959. It was used to describe the work of painters from California, who adopted an intentionally unbiased paint application and outlined areas of color with particular sharpness and clarity, as I did.
