PROFILE:
SALUTATIONS! Greetings! My name is Georges Seurat (pronounced Georgess Sir-rah). I was born in Paris, France, on December 2, 1859. I died early in my career on March, 29, 1891 at the age of 32.
When I was 20 years old, I visited an art gallery and admired large scaled paintings and a few months later I visited the Fourth Impressionist Exhibition and saw radical new works by Impressionist painters Claude Monet and Camille Pissarro. The Impressionists' ways of conveying light and atmosphere influenced my own thinking about painting.
I have always been interested in science and by combining this interest with my painting, I came up with "optical mixing" Rather than blending colors together on my palette, I dabbed tiny strokes, or "points" of pure color onto the canvas. When I placed colors side-by-side, they would appear to blend when viewed from a distance, producing luminous, shimmering color. The viewer's eye would blend the colors together.
I am considered one of the Impressionists, not only because I experimented with technique, but also because of my interest in everyday subject matter.

ART MOVEMENT--IMPRESSIONISM
I am an Impressionist painter and belonged to that art movement. Impressionist art was popular during the years 1872-1892, a short 20 year span. Impressionism artists turned away from the fine finish and detail to which most artists of the day aspired, we aimed to capture the momentary, sensory effect of a scene-the "impression" of objects made on the eye in a fleeting instant. To achieve this effect, many of my artist friends moved from the studio to the streets and countryside, painting "en plein air" (in open air).
