- Henri Matisse ('on-ree maa-teese)
Greetings! I was born December 31,1869, In Henri-Émile-Benoît in the Nord area of northern France. My parents worked in the grain business. When I was young I worked as a legal clerk, I then went to Paris for a law degree in 1887-89. I came back having a position in a law office in Saint-Quentin. In the mornings I would study art.
When I was 21 years old I moved to Paris to further my training in art. Years later, I started to show my art work in small exhibitions in the mid 1880's. The people liked my art work and I started to travel, such as to London and to Corsica. I married Amélie Parayre in 1898 and we had 3 children. I then began to produce art as a full time career. My followers were delighted and impressed with my amazing art work. In 1917 I began spending winters on the Mediterranean, and in 1920 a book was published about me and my work, and that marked my importance in the art world. In 1921 I moved my family to Nice on the French Riviera.
While there I became ill and needed surgery, I was unable to continue painting, but that didn't stop me! I began creating with cut paper, and later needed assistants to help with the cutting, but I never stopped creating. I died of a heart attack on November 3, 1954 of the age of 84. I was buried in nearby Cimiez. I'am still well known as a good influence in the artistic world and one of the most important artists in the mid-1920's.🌏

My intent was to use all the art elements in each work, giving each one equal dominance.... line, space, shape, value, color, texture

ABOUT MY ART:
When I began my painting career, I painted mostly women in interior places. I wanted to use all art elements in each painting making each element equally important.
During the second phase of my painting career, I kept the wild mark on the canvas as before, but this time I added wild and unusual color. Color was placed in unexpected places. An art critique stated that the art looked as if created by a wild beast (fauve) in french, and the term stuck! I am known as the father of the art movement FAUVISM.
I finished my life, old and infirm, but still creating art everyday. Never did I quit!
Painting was over for me, but I switched to creating with cut papers. Sometimes needing to pay assistants to help place the papers once cut.
