Personal Profile:
Hello! My name is Janet Fish I was born May 18, 1938 in Boston, Massachusetts. I am widely known as a contemporary American Realist artist. I paint still life paintings, some light reflecting off of different surfaces, and empty/partially filled glassware.
I was born into a family of artists, my grandfather was impressionist Clark Voorhees, my mother was a sculptor, and my sister is a photographer. I studied sculpting and printmaking at Smith College and Yale University. In the early 1970's I created my first still life painting Daisies, and I had found my signature style. Some of my art work can be found in art museums such as the Chicago Art Institute, the Boston Museum, the Whitney Museum in New York, and Fort Wayne Museum of Art. Still life has been considered the lowest type of objective painting, however I have revitalized it with my technique and accuracy.

About my art:
I believe that to stop changing is to die. This drives me to experiment and to master the art of painting. I am a realist painter, and subject matter includes everyday objects such as fruits and glassware. With calligraphic brushstrokes I create structure in my paintings through the movement of color and light. You can see a difference in my works as well, the objects that serve as my frames for color are continually changing. And, although I do not work towards capturing a photographic moment, I keep a quality of light, mood, and a sense of place in my artworks.

My paintings are aesthetic marvels. They highlight the ways in which of light, color, and shape provide our world in ever more pleasing combinations and visions. Very often my work inspires a contemporary feel into both energy and subject matter. My paintings of things can be seen as pure delight, beautiful objects that convey no message, that cause the mind to stop thinking and to contemplate the marvel before one’s eyes.
