Edgar Degas (Ed-gar Day-ga)
PROFILE:
Bonjour, my name is Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas, but you can call me Edgar. I was born on July 19, 1834 and passed away on September 27, 1917 at the age of 83. I was a painter and sculptor from France. I really enjoy dance, and I love historical paintings. I fought in the Franco-Prussian War, and when my father died, my brother, René, amassed large debts, and I had to sell my house and the paintings I collected to preserve my family name. I did, however, gain more financial security in the future.

I am classified by many as an Impressionist artist, although this view draws skepticism from many. The Impressionist movement started in the 1860s and 1870s. Impressionists use many bright colors and focus mainly on the use of light in their pieces.
Here are some historical events that occurred during my lifetime:
--1837: Queen Victoria begins her reign
--1859: Charles Darwin publishes The Origin of Species
--1861: The American Civil War begins
--1870: The Franco-Prussian War begins
--1886: The Statue of Liberty is unveiled
--1892: Henry Ford produces the first car
